Buying electronic equipment doesn't require professional or expert knowledge of the actual product. People buy electronics in order to satisfy their objectives. Buying laptop could for example increase your productivity if you write a lot, for example a journalist. This will allow specific people to meet their specific objectives. Other people will look at how much RAM it has, the processor speed and graphics card.
Buying a good laptop should a priority. There are several companies to look at that sell quality laptops. I do not suggest spending less than $600 on a laptop as its quality may be lower. Dell has pretty high quality, low end, mid range and high range laptops. Low end and mid range would be Dell Inspiron. High end would be Dell XPS or Extreme Performance System. The questions that you need to be asking yourself: Am I going to play games on this laptop or watch movies? Or will I just use it for productivity purposes such as typing stuff and checking and reading email?
When you are done answering these questions, you will be able to purchase your laptop. Overspending money on electronics is not a good investment. Computers generally depreciate at a rate high rate and if you buy one today for let's say $700 you will not be able to sell it for $500 tomorrow.
Mid range laptop will have 2 GB of Random Access Memory, Dual Core processor, that is with two processing cores and hard drive capacity of 160 GB and plus. The most important thing is the processor. Don't buy a laptop with one processing core! It would be a huge mistake. Make sure the processor has two cores as you will be able to use multiple applications.
A high range laptop will have at least 3 GB of Random Access Memory, Dual core processor faster than the one for mid range and hard drive capacity of 250 GB and plus. Also, high range laptops usually come with dedicated graphics card that usually has 128 MB of memory and plus. As I highlighted before, investing excess money into a laptop is like buying Enron stock and then losing 99% of your money. Don't make that mistake.
Today's laptop will be twice as fast and twice as cheap in less than 18 months. Quality matters. Look at buying HP, Dell or perhaps Acer. I wouldn't personally recommend Toshiba or Sony since these respected laptop makers sell at a high mark up rate. Consider buying Dell since there is not middle man involved, making the product cheaper ad you can also customize your system.
